A matte painting is a painted representation of a landscape, set, or distant location that allows filmmakers to create the illusion of an environment that is not present at the filming location. Historically, matte painters and film technicians have used various techniques to combine a matte-painted image with live-action footage. At its best, depending on the skill levels of the artists and technicians, the effect is "seamless" and creates environments that would otherwise be impossible or expensive to film. In the scenes the painting part is static and movements are integrated on it.

Throughout the 1990s, traditional matte paintings were still in use, but more often in conjunction with digital compositing. Paint has now been superseded by digital images created using photo references, 3-D models, and drawing tablets. Matte painters combine their digitally matte painted textures within computer-generated 3-D environments, allowing for 3-D camera movement

CYBER PUNK
Task 1

Matte painting of cyber punk environment: I did collect a different pictures from internet and just layered it in Photoshop and did some colour corrections, which Ii really important for cyberpunk "neon lights" vision. The once you get the right perspective in composition - all is done. Blured back ground for the illusion of depth - and you can see the result on the next video:

CHERNOBYL

task 2

This task is most complicated - to create shot of Chernobyl (HBOs movie stile). To be the industrial zone of Chernobyl - power plant - and also to be a winter. Again after the research for reference pictures, I did the basic idea of vision in Photoshop. Then build some basic geometry in Maya for camera projection and in NUKE did compositing combine projections of all the building is a single shot. Also add some smoke and fog. And also 2 versions of final vision - like colours and tone.

Abandoned Hall

28 weeks water

Working with the supplied footage, create a dolly shot that fits within the film ’28 Weeks Later’.

  • The shot should be cleaned and free of people.

  • The colour palette should match the film.

  • There should some indication of wear and tear, with nature starting to reclaim building.

Workshop with Josh Parks

That was amazing - 3 days of pure compositing. We learned couple of technics for greenscreen keying, colour correction, some basic expression, etc. It was a really good practise for me. I am not so happy with the final result - but in this workshop /as by the way in every task we do/ - it is most important for me to some "test" - to try different technics, so - yes - that was really useful.

Mad Hatter tea party

Concept design

I love this one. That was a "group project". And we done it - lets say not bad. There is definitely a lot more to be done but the idea for the group project is really cool. So some of us did modelling, we work on the concept, green screen keying. etc, etc. Again - another good practice, working with the other  artists, everyone to do a small part of the whole and then to put them together. I also did a test with the minor on the wall - behind the talent - just trying to add an extra space in the shot. But that was test only. It is in the videos below - but not in the final version.

MadHatter.jpg

This is my idea for the interior, and we stick to this with some changes. And I did this vision because it is a MAD Hatter, so thats why it is a kin of surreal, Alice in wonderland stile. I thing the main problem in the final version of project is - it is not clear - who is this guy, where is he, etc. I mean - we are the only one who nows - this is Mad Hatter nowa days - but for the random viewer - it is just a guy in the hall. But - yeah - more practice more  experience...
